The Projects

The lung microbiome, inflammatory consequences with acute pneumonia among HIV patients and pulmonary dysfunction associated with HIV-infected individuals in Colombia

Our general objective is to study the correlation between lung microbiome, inflammation and pulmonary dysfunction among HIV-infected individuals sampled longitudinally. To achieve this objective, we propose three specific aims:
1. To characterize the lung microbiome over a year.
2. To characterize lung inflammation for a year following acute pneumonia.
3. To correlate the lung microbiome and inflammation with pulmonary dysfunction and identify potential anti-inflammatory targets for adjunct therapy to decrease the pulmonary damage of HIV patients.

Host gene expression and cytokine profile used to identify latent TB infection and the
transition to active disease.

This is a basic science biomedical project. The aim of the study is to identify the genetic expression and cytokine's profile in individuals with latent tuberculosis (LTBI), pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), and nonTB-infected persons. The purpose of our research is to determine gene expression and unique inflammatory patterns in each particular group of participants.
